We are pleased to announce that Eunomia’s Athens based Office has been selected to deliver work for Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) on Single Use Plastics.

This study will focus on preparing policy guidelines to address Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items in the Mediterranean region, with a specific focus on Egypt, Morocco, Montenegro and Greece.

The Centre was established in the framework of the UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan and designed to support the member countries of the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean. This work will feed into the Marine Program of Work for 2020-2021 which includes preparation of SUP guidelines on measures to reduce and prevent single use plastic items.

The study will:

  • Report on the baseline situation for SUP in the Mediterranean, as well as policy measures and their effect;
  • Define a methodology to collect information on SUP of concern in non-EU Mediterranean countries, including SUP production, use and related socioeconomic information; and
  • Deliver expert input to regional training on SUP to representatives of national governments, the private sector and civil society organisations from North Africa, Middle East and Western Balkans.

The work aims to analyse the effect of different policy options, gather information in the Mediterranean context, and raising countries awareness and capacity to address SUP. Eunomia will be working with SCP/RAC for the rest of 2020 to deliver this work to reduce SUP usage in the Mediterranean.
