12/07/11 Eunomia report for CPRE shows deposit refund scheme would create over 4000 new jobs
Press Release
TUC Climate Change Conference hears how green jobs might be created from the creation of a new Deposit Refund Scheme
A new report has been launched by Eunomia Research & Consulting on behalf of the campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) at the TUC Climate Change Conference on ‘What Makes a Good Green Government?’ Entitled ‘From Waste to Work: the Potential for a Deposit Refund Scheme to Create Jobs in the UK’, the report builds on a previous Eunomia study which considered the introduction of a deposit refund system in the UK. The report specifically examines the number of jobs that could be lost and gained through the introduction of such a system, what types of jobs these would be and where these jobs might be located.
Debbie Fletcher, Senior consultant at Eunomia, who presented the research, said:
“As well as increasing recycling and reducing litter in the environment, the introduction of a UK deposit refund system has the potential to create more than 4,000 UK jobs. At a time when the government is pushing for green economic growth, the report provides a practical example of how this might be achievable”.
The research predicts that the introduction of a DRS in the UK would lead to an increase in the number of jobs available by between 3,000 and 4,300 full-time equivalent posts, depending on whether or not reprocessing jobs are included, as well as resulting in an overall increase in the number of higher-skilled jobs. The introduction of a DRS will therefore lead to an increase in green-economy based jobs.
