14/09/11 Eunomia launches new waste efficiency report

Eunomia Research & Consulting Ltd (Eunomia) is today launching a new summary report, “10 Ways to Cut the Costs of Local Authority Waste Collection”.

Central Government is urging all parts of the public sector to do ‘more for less’ to offset the impact of reduced spending. Eunomia’s experience shows that when it comes to local authority waste collection services this will be possible with many authorities already managing to cut costs whilst protecting or even improving services.

Recycling and composting collection services have changed beyond all recognition, with household waste recycling rates quadrupling between 2000 and 2010 from 10% to 40%. Clearly a huge amount has been learned over the last decade but we’ve still not had time to share all those lessons. Where services are contracted out there are long intervals between retenders so the opportunity to make savings doesn’t come around often.

Now that local authorities are having to work through the first major period of budgetary retrenchment since recycling and composting collection services were first introduced there are opportunities to both share the lessons between authorities and to fine-tune services to reduce their cost.

Through Eunomia’s extensive experience gained through working with a number of local authorities to drive waste service efficiency we’ve summarised what’s being done in a new report, “10 Ways to Cut the Costs of Local Authority Waste Collection”.

Eunomia Director James Fulford said of the report:

This short report discusses the types of savings that can be made through increased productivity, getting the most from your contract, exploring economies of scale and the opportunity offered by charged services. These suggestions are all the result of real on-the-ground experience which has delivered significant demonstrable savings.”

Eunomia is launching the report at the Recycling & Waste Management (RWM) Exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham from 13-15 September 2011. This will include a seminar presentation on Wednesday 14th September (12.00-13.00 at the Local Authority Theatre) under the heading “Cutting Costs and Improving Performance?” Free copies of the report will also be available from Eunomia’s exhibition stand (number 2397 - next to the Technology & Innovation Theatre). For those not attending the event, the report available to download here.
