Hermes

Eunomia uses a WRAP-approved model called Hermes, which we developed in-house, to inform our advice on collection systems.  Refined over the last decade during the course of over a hundred collection modelling projects for local authorities, Hermes lets us offer you sophisticated analysis on the pros and cons of different waste and recycling collection systems. It provides you with reassurance that the recommendations we make will achieve your real-world ambitions.

Hermes enables us to:

  • Compare up to 100 collection system options at a time
  • Include up to five collection/bring systems (e.g. refuse, recycling, organic etc.)
  • Include up to six variations of each system (e.g. suburban, rural, flats etc.)
  • Factor in both revenue costs and annualised capital costs
  • Show the costs of each component of the system (e.g. the costs of food waste collection and treatment) as well as the full system costs
  • Use GIS to factor in geographical considerations such as drive distances and times, including from depot to collection zone, between dwellings and from zone to tip
  • Model dynamically how the performance of collection systems (e.g. how well-used it is by householders) influences the resource demand on staff and vehicles.

Results produced by Hermes can also be used to inform a ‘TEEP test’ to check compliance with the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, which is now an important part of any collection service change.

Prior to embarking on a Hermes model, we typically use Benchmarker and WasteFlow to inform the recycling performance, fill rates, collection times, material income and avoided disposal costs that power the model.
