Chris Sherrington, Principal Consultant at Eunomia, is speaking in Brussels on Tuesday 4th November at a Conference organised by Seas at Risk.

The event, entitled ‘Making the Link: Marine Litter and the Circular Economy’ will be held in the European Parliament. The aim of the event, which is sponsored by MEP Simona Bonafè is to:

  • Foster understanding of the environmental damage caused by a lack of resource efficiency and poor waste management practices;
  • Highlight the importance of the waste target review and circular economy package; and
  • Create dialogue between policy makers and stakeholders on the topic of marine litter and the circular economy.

Chris will be talking about the importance of focussing efforts on reducing land-based litter, which is understood to account for 80% of the litter that enters the marine environment. He will draw upon evidence from previous Eunomia research that suggests the benefits of doing so, via well designed interventions, including economic instruments, will outweigh the costs, even before accounting for the reduced impacts on the marine environment.

Other speakers include Sam Fanshawe, Chief Executive of the Marine Conservation Society, Thomas Maes, Monitoring Programme Co-ordinator at CEFAS, Joachim D’Eugenio from DG Environment of the European Commission, and Dr Martin Engelmann from Plastics Europe.

Details of the event, and information on how to register, can be found here.
